Abstract (EN)
Single photon emission tomography (SPECT) and positron emission tomography (PET) technologies are widely utilized for diagnosis in nuclear medicine. These imaging devices provide knowledge at the physiological, metabolic, and molecular levels. The image quality that is obtained via both SPECT and PET scanners is impacted by the geometric design and physical properties of component materials. Today, simulation platforms are indispensable tools for the optimization and modification of devices in the field of nuclear medicine. Simulation methods are not only cost- and time-effective in design but are also used as effective tools in the development of new imaging systems. In this context, the subject of this thesis is to develop simulation codes for the dual-head Mediso Any Scan S SPECT at SBU Trabzon Kanuni Training and Research Hospital and the GENERAL ELECTRIC (GE) Discovery-IQ PET model positron emission tomography (PET) imaging systems at KTU Farabi Hospital International. In this context, GEANT4-based simulation codes were developed for the relevant SPECT and PET systems. The validity of these codes was verified by comparing them with experimental performance parameters for both SPECT and PET systems. Furthermore, collimator optimization was performed in addition to intrinsic performance parameters for the modelled SPECT scanner using various scintillation crystals.
