In the context of sports news Yeşil Gireson Newspaper analysis (1928 – 1950): Index–pictures and selected texts

Index and catalogue are one of the fields of study in the academic world. Classification of complex facts and shelf browsing, in addition to ease of access and use of information, provides a great time saving. Index and catalogue studies, which are frequently used in Social Sciences, are unfortunately not popular in the field of Sports Sciences. The reason for this study is to contribute to this gap to some extent. In this context, the aim of this research is to subject a total of 952 issues of the "Yeşil Gireson Newspaper" published in Giresun in the Early Republican Period, between the 142nd issue of 1928 and the 1155th issue of 1950, to the index and catalogue method in terms of sports themes. The data obtained within this scope were classified for the first time in the academic field under five different categories as "Sports News in Chronological Order", "Sports News by Subject", "Sports News by Authors", "Sports News by Selected Texts" and "Sports News by Pictures". As a result of the scans, 715 sports news items were identified. In the light of the title and text analysis, the news was classified as "Shooting", "Athletics", "Basketball", "Equestrian", "Cycling", "Boxing", "Football", "Wrestling", "Skiing", "Club", "Olympics", "Chess", "Sports Day", "Water Sports", "Tennis", "Volleyball" and "Others". According to the data obtained; it was determined that the branches other than water sports, athletics, chess, volleyball and football were not directly related to Giresun Province. There was an increasing sports intensity and diversity in this period, which coincided with three periods (Turkish Sports Associations - Turkish Sports Institution - General Directorate of Physical Education) and a cultural movement (Community Centers). However, football is the most popular sport in Giresun, as it is everywhere in the world. Approximately 350 football news and 160 news directly related to sports clubs prove this. The news reporting the sports festivals held in Giresun, especially every May from 1929 to 1950, shows that the Republican regime's project to raise admirable citizens continued smoothly in Giresun. It was determined that 693 of the 715 sports news were unsigned and only 22 of them had authors. The authors sometimes used a nickname, sometimes an institutional identity, and sometimes their own names directly to appear to the reader. 24 sports news items reflecting the spirit of the period were conveyed in the fourth section of this thesis without changing their original texts. As a result of the examination, a total of 30 sports photographs were identified within the date range limiting our study. As a result of the analysis, it was determined that the majority of the photographs belonged to the sports festivals held in Giresun.
