Abstract (EN)

People's way of life, areas they live in, cleaning and toilet habits, lack of infrastructure, sewage and septic tanks have an important effect in spreading of intestinal parasites. Cleaning of water provided in houses, health education level, destitution and ignorance are also effective. Therefore, diseases caused by intestinal parasites are common in children living in east and southeast region of Turkey. The study was conducted over 357 children between the ages of 4 and 12 which were admitted to Şırnak state hospital. Prevalence of intestinal parasites and levels of IgE and hemogram were investigated and compared with earlier studies. Parasites observed in 223 (62.4%) children and 134 (37.6%) children were clean. Frequency and distribution of intestinal parasites in 357 children were as follows; 2 (0.5 %) Entamoeba histolytica/dispar, 67 (18.7 %) Giardia intestinalis, 17 (4 %) Blastocystis hominis, 25 (7 %) Dientamoeba fragilis, 52 (14.5 %) Ascaris lumbricoides, 86 (24 %) Enterobius vermicularis, 89 (24,9 %) Taenia saginata, 11 (3 %) Hymenolepis nana, 1 (0.2 %) Strongyloides stercoralis ve 1 (0.2 %) Dicrocoelium dendriticum. There were no significant differences (p>0,05) between IgE levels determined from blood serum samples of children infected and non-infected. However, high incidence of T. saginata infection which transmitted by raw meat showed that there were still raw or not inadequate cooked meats was consumed in Sirnak province. Comparisons to studies conducted in other cities of the region, higher frequency of parasites were observed in Şırnak. It was believed that serious infrastructure problems have not been resolved in the province and accordingly infiltration of excreta to soil and water could be occurred. According to recent studies conducted in our country, protozoa infections are frequently seen due to the lack of cleanliness and sanitation nevertheless helminth infections which transmitted by infiltration of human excreta are becoming rare as A. lumbricoides infections were observed 14.5% in our study although it is no longer a problem in cities have healty infrastructure.
