Abstract (EN)

Wood has been recognized for centuries throughout the world for its versatile and attractive engineering and structural properties. However, like other biological materials, wood is susceptible to environmental degradation. Deterioration of wood in natural weathering process involves very complex combination of chemical, mechanical and light energy factors contribute to what is described as weathering.Destruction of wooden materials used outdoors can be the result of either organic or inorganic factors. Organic factors are fungi, mould and mildew, bacteria and insects. Inorganic factors are sunlight, wind, water, various chemicals and fire. Variation of destruction caused by the factors mentioned above differs from wood species. Chemical, microscopic, and physical changes, coloration and discoloration, caused by biological factors happen after certain periods of time.Paints, wood finishes and preservatives protect wood for a very long time and prolong their service life. Highest protection can be achieved by using paints and the lowest is by transparent varnishes.Wood is treated various preservatives and paints in order to gain more service life and physical appearance. In this study, smooth and rough surface chestnut and scotch pine panels were treated some paints and preservatives, following physical changes were investigated on the brightness, coloring, flaking, surface roughness and cracking properties of the wood after 3 months, 6 months and 12 months.Stain is performed the best for the flaking and cracking properties compared to other preservatives. Paint and Tanalith-E performed the minimum total color change. Maximum color change were found Immersol Aqua samples. Paint is performed the best for the surface roughness compared to other preservatives.
