Daily lives of Syrian immigrant women

Daily life comprises routines and activities that an individual performs regularly. Despite its apparent simplicity, this concept has a certain level of complexity. Furthermore, it remains an enigmatic realm for the individual, who forms the fundamental unit of society. The micro-scale theories of daily life, which suggest that it is feasible to comprehend society from an individual's perspective, position the individual at the forefront of sociological investigations. This study aims to provide a sociological perspective on the everyday life experiences of Syrian migrant women, exploring how theories of daily life sociology apply to individuals in this context. The research aims to make these women's everyday experiences visible and contribute to the literature on "migration and women." The study takes place in Batman province, with a sample group consisting of Syrian migrant women who have experienced forced migration. Before beginning the research, ethical permissions were obtained from the Ministry of Interior, Directorate of Migration Management, and Bingöl University Rectorate, Social and Human Sciences Scientific Research and Publication Ethics Committee. Qualitative research methods were used, including interview and observation techniques. A semi-structured interview form consisting of 44 questions was used to interview 17 Syrian migrant women in their homes, selected through snowball (chain) sampling. The study excluded participants over 65 due to a pilot application conducted before the research. To address language barriers, the research team conducted home visits with three translators fluent in Arabic, Kurdish, and Turkish. The study yielded 161 pages of raw data, revealing how Syrian migrant women engage in secret acts of resistance and the significance they attach to these actions. The findings suggest that women strive to transition from passivity to active agency in their daily lives.
