Sustainability of complementary health insurance: A research on lecturers

Abstract (EN)
Complementary health insurance is a product of private health insurance. General health insurance is a type of insurance that is not included guarantee packages or is included in collateral package but in cases where partially met, the individual must pay out of pocket or wants to receive services to higher standards. Complementary health insurance in Turkey has been included in Social Insurance and General Health Insurance Law No.5510 for the first time. The definition, scope and application of this insurance were revealed by the Social Security Institution (SSI) in the circular dated 28.06.2012. The aim of this study is to identify the level of knowledge about complementary health insurance of lecturers at Karadeniz Technical University, examine their perspectives on complementary health insurance application and adress ideas for the sustainability of this insurance. In addition, it was investigated whether the opinions of the lecturers differ according to the demographic criteria and the existence of the relationship between them with the selected hypotheses was investigated. In the study, the survey method was used as a data collection technique. Within the scope of the survey study, survey questions were directed to 420 lecturers at Karadeniz Technical University. Among the participants in the study; there are lecturers with the titles of Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor, Research Assistant and Instructor. T and ANOVA analyses were used to examine the obtained data. As a result of the research; among the lecturers in terms of the sustainability of complementary health insurance, it was found that there were differences in gender, marital status, faculty at university, monthly income status, preference of the health institution, frequency of going to private hospital, health expenditures, having private health insurance, being aware of complementary health insurance, information levels about complementary health insurance and having complementary health insurance. In addition, it was concluded that 47.10% of lecturers were aware of this insurance and only 29.30% had this insurance.
