Abstract (EN)
Many fundamental reforms were launched in the Ottoman Empire around the era initiated by the ?Tanzimat Fermanı? (The Rescript of Gulhane). These reforms included comprehensive regulations mainly for the non-Muslim population too. Among the non-Muslims, Armenians had a crucial position. In this study, the social, cultural, economic and legal characteristics of Armenians between 1839 and 1923 are examined through the model of Afyonkarahisar city. Moreover, the process of Armenian nationalisation is tackled in the context of a multi-national and multi-cultural empire. Furthermore, the fact of ?deportation?, that is still vividly discussed, is evaluated in the case of Afyonkarahisar in a humanitarian manner.
