The effects of transparent additions on the user in the historical environment

Historical environments, which are the expression of architectural accumulation, should be preserved in accordance with the requirements of its age without damaging its identity. Transparency, a tool used in the design of contemporary additions, by bridging the old and the new, allowing the historic building to preserve its identity and the contemporary addition to reveal its identity. In the design of a transparent addition, it is as important for the users to adopt the building as the harmony between the old and the new. The thoughts of the people who will use the building are as important as the architects. The aim of the study is to examine the harmony/contrast of transparent additions in the historical environment with the existing building through design principles, criteria and approaches, and to determine effects on two different user groups, Architecture and Non-Architecture. A questionnaire was applied to the users. As a result, it is seen that the effect of transparent additions in the historical environment is generally positive from the beginning to the end of the survey in the Architecture group; in the Non-Architecture group, while it is negative at the beginning, it shifts to positive (abstention according to architecture) afterwards. As long as the transparent additions are designed in accordance with the historical structure, they can be perceived positively and preferred by the user, even if they have an opposite approach.
