Abstract (EN)

The principle aim of this research project is to investigate old and modern university campuses by taking into account different design factors. There were several changes in the higher educational system in the Turkish Republican period. There were needs for new building systems for the new concept of the higher educational system. As the beginning of the study historic developments of the higher educational buildings are investigated and examples are given from Turkish- Islamic as well as Western higher educational institutions. Contemporary planning concept of the universities were introduced. Some these important planning concepts are discussed in lenght such as perceptional environment, pedestrian scale, pedestrian campus, flexibility, uncertanity, modification, growth, programming, planning and organization. Spatial analysis of the Medresse and Külliyet (campus) were done for the explanation of their static building characteristics. The design principles and utilization of these historic built environments were discussed. Dynamics of the contemporary university campuses, their design principles and their spatial analyses have done from functional usage, academic development areas, separation of pedestrian walkways etc. point of view. Therefore, social structure behind the Medresse and the Külliyet's pyhsical formation and the educational model were defined. The values that are supporting the Medresse system has been examined.
