The reflection of design concept in the context of leadership in architecture

Leaders who take on the duty of representation of the societies are able to make decisions that can determine the future of the masses in all areas of life such as the economy, war, politics, health, environment, city, art and culture through the legitimate power which has granted to them. In this respect, it is seen that the concept of leadership, which social life necessitates and at the same time has a deep rooted past, is also extremely important in today's information and communication age. On the other hand; it seems that the architecture, which has the potential to change the forms of social life, continues to be used as an ideological vehicle by the leaders today as it was in the past. In addition to the monumental design that reflects social memory, urban design, in which the general qualities of living spaces, and economic and social relations are determined, also serves to the ideologies of the leaders. In this respect, the relationships between leader and leadership style, ideology and architectural design approaches of leaders is important. In this study, it is aimed that the reflection of democratic and authoritarian leadership styles in architecture can be understood through the concrete examples of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, Thomas Jefferson as democratic leaders and Napoleon Bonapart, and Adolf Hitler as authoritarian leaders. In this context, the relationship between the ideologies and design approaches of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, Thomas Jefferson, Napoleon Bonapart, and Adolf Hitler have been elaborated firstly with the concepts of leadership and ideology, and then with the concepts of democratic and authoritarian leadership. Finally; the relationship between leader and design has been reviewed comparatively in the context of the leaders. This way, new approaches have been proposed for understanding the relationship between democratic and authoritarian leaders' approaches to architectural design and their conception of leadership.
