Abstract (EN)

Aim: It is aimed to investigate the causes of unilateral chewing and to measure the periodontal space and evaluate periodontal parameters radiographically in the teeth on the chewing and non-chewing side. Material metot: This study was carried out on a total of 53 individuals (41 females, 12 males) between the ages of 15-45. As a result of the anamnesis and clinical examination, individuals who chewed unilaterally were included in the study. Our study was designed as split-mouth. The side where the individual chews was determined as the control zone and the other side as the working zone. Periodontal space (PA) measurements were made by taking bitewing films from the posterior teeth of the patients. Periodontal clinical parameters such as plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI), probing bleeding (SC) and probing pocket depth (SCD) were evaluated. Comparisons of the right and left jaws of the individuals were made. Wilcoxon test was used to compare data that were not normally distributed. Results: In our study, PI, GI and SCD values of the left jaw were found to be significantly different from those on the right side (p<0.05). There was a significant difference between the PI and GI values of the right jaw in those with the left side of preference compared to the left jaw (p<0.05). In SCD values, a significant difference was found in the right jaw compared to the left upper and lower jaw (p<0.05). There was no significant difference in the comparison of the mean PA value and the presence of SK between the control and study regions of right and left preference(p>0.05). There was no significant difference between the unilateral chewing reasons, periodontal status and right/left regions of individuals. Conclusion: Although it was determined that dental caries and other factors caused unilateral chewing, there was no statistically significant difference between them. PI, GI and SCD scores of clinical parameters were found to be similar to previous studies. We think that chewing is not the only effect of the difference in the mean PA value measured between the posterior teeth on the chewing side and the non-chewing side, and more detailed studies are needed on this subject.
