Özet (EN)

This study aims to examine the differences in the perceptions of parental acceptance and rejection between children diagnosed as having Type I Diabetes and their mothers and healthy control group with no diagnosis. The research mainly focused on significant differences regarding children's and their mothers' perceptions about parental acceptance and rejection by comparing clinical and nonclinical samples. Children who are currently in treatment process in Gaziantep a Hospital were recruited for this study. Besides, healthy control group were randomly selected in Gaziantep. There are 52 children with Type I Diabetes dianosis and 52 mothers, 52 healthy children and 52 mothers. For data collection about measuring parental acceptance and rejection, "Parental Acceptance-Rejection Questionnaire (PARQ) Children and Mother Forms were used. Also, different demographic and personal information forms were provided to mothers of each group. With the informed consent of the mothers, children's and mothers' answers were compared and analyzed for the study. Based on the results, significant differences were found among clinical and nonclinical groups regarding dimensions of parental acceptance and rejection including children's warmth/affection and undifferentiated rejection. The scores obtained from clinical group in these subscales were found as significanly higher than healthy control group. Besides, mothers' perceptions regarding undifferentiated rejection was also found as significantly higher than healthy control groups. These results implies that the scores indicating parental rejection were observed in clinical group with different subscales. Another finding indicating the relationship among dimensions of parental acceptance and rejection also demonstrated that the childrens' scores were negatively and significantly correlated with their mothers' scores in clinical group. This may explain the changes in children's perception about their parents' acceptance and rejection due to their health conditions. The scores that the children and mothers reported were found as different and negatively correlated. Mothers reported lower scores in the scales as compared to their children in clinical group. The study is important with the findings, because of the improving effective support and education for families and children with chronic diseases. The findings may be contributive in terms of structing efficient and beneficial programs for the families and children in order to maintain well-being and functionality.
