Assessment of urban spatial quality of mass housing areas; gGziantep example

The purpose of this research is to develop criteria for the assessment of urban spatial quality in mass housing areas and to test these criteria. Mass housing areas, which are created by public in urban transformation and development areas in the city of Gaziantep after the year 2000, are evaluated in terms of urban spatial quality within the scope of this research. The main material of the research is based on field research. In addition, zoning plans and architectural projects regarding mass housing areas were also used as other materials. The methodology of the research is based on the assessment of spatial quality criteria, which were developed based on literature and field research, in 5 point likert scale. Each criterion and sub-indicators forming this criterion were scored in regions selected as sample area based on observation. The total score as a result of scoring was divided into number of sub-indicators and arithmetical average was found. This enabled both criteria and success/suitability values of indicator titles to be found. It is seen as a result of the research that urban space quality is generally inadequate in mass housing areas created for around last twenty years. While mass housing areas created especially during recent years developed within the framework of diversity, continuity, harmony and identity indicators, they are considered inadequate within the framework of the other indicators.
