An analysis of the socio-economic and legal aspects of medicinal and aromatic honey forests in the Trabzon Regional Directorate of Forestry

This study examines the current status of honey forests located within the boundaries of the Trabzon Regional Forestry Directorate—specifically in the provinces of Trabzon, Rize, Gümüşhane, and Bayburt—using survey methods to assess their contributions to beekeeping and producers' perceptions. The research findings reveal that honey forests are critically important for beekeeping due to their rich biodiversity and floristic variety. The vast majority of participants emphasized the positive impact of honey forests on beekeeping activities, primarily because they serve as key sources of nectar and pollen. However, several obstacles were identified, including distrust in marketing processes, a lack of technical support and training, and infrastructural deficiencies. The study suggests that improving marketing systems, expanding technical education, increasing infrastructure investments, and strengthening legal regulations are essential for the development of sustainable beekeeping. It also highlights the need for enhancing the participation of women and youth in beekeeping and supporting producer cooperatives, emphasizing important social dimensions.
