The investigation of coastal protection structures between Trabzon and Rize cities

The highway, located in the coastline of the Eastern Black Sea of Turkey, due to inconvenience land, is made by being filled from the coast and sea. So the coastal stability is broken and waves lead to destruction on the stability of coastal structures and coastal erosion. In order to avoid these negative effects, coastal protection structures are made. Coastal protection structures between Trabzon and Rize cities built within the scope of the Eastern Black Sea Coast Road are classified in three groups as revetments, groins and fishery harbours. The study comprises of six chapters. In the first chapter, general information is given about the studies previously conducted on the subject, wave mechanics and coastal protection structures. In the second chapter, the performed studies are described. In the third chapter, coastal revetments in terms of stability and the environmental effects, groins in terms of material deposition and creating shore, fishery harbours in terms of stability and meterial deposition, are examined. In the fourth and fifth chapters, the results and recommendations of the study are given, respectively. In the sixth chapter, references are given. In the appendices, the figures of coastal protection structures between Trabzon and Rize cities are given and the cross sections of Rize Çiftekavak shelter is presented. As a result, it has been concluded that the sizes of coastal revetment built in the same coastal are inadequate in terms of stability and there is not any filter layer. It is determined that groins are successful in creating shore and fishery harbours get shallow.Key Words: Coastal Protection Structures, Groins, Coastal Revetments, Breakwaters, Black Sea Coastal Highway
