The effects of trus guided prostate needle biyopsy on lower urinary tract symptoms and uroflowmetric parameters

Abstract (EN)
Introduction and Objective: In this prospective study, we investigated the effect of TRUSG (Transrectal ultrasonography) guided- prostate needle biopsy, which is considered safe, on lower urinary tract symptoms and uroflowmetric parameters. Materials and Methods: Between April 2012 and January 2013, one hundred patients with suspect of prostate cancer were enrolled. Transrectal ultrasound guided prostate biyopsy was performed. Before biyopsy, uroflowmetry, postvoiding residual urine volume and urine analysis were assessed. International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) chart was filled. At the first and seventh days, uroflowmetry, postvoiding residual urine volume and urine analysis were done. At the seventh day, IPSS were repeated. For Statistical analysis Wilcoxon, Kruskal-Wallis and Friedman tests on SPSS14.0 were utilized. Results: After biyopsy, compared with prebiopsy values, maximum peak flow and IPSS did not change statistically. Also in subgroups according to age, prostate volume, prostate specific antigen level, digital rectal examination findings and histopathologic diagnosis, the alteration in maximum peak flow and IPSS after biyopsy was not found statistically significant. In IPSS subgroups post-biopsy peak flow values and inversely, in peak flow subgroups post-biopsy IPSS values did not changed in a statistically significant fashion. . On the seventh day, postvoding residual urine volume and eritrosituria increased significantly. Acute urinary retention was observed in three patients (%3) with benign prostates of more than 50 cc. Two patients(%2) were hospitalized because of urinary tract infection. Conclusion: We considered that TRUSG guided prostate biyopsy did not cause a statistically significant difference in lower urinary tract symptoms and uroflowmetric parmeters. High prostate volume and bening histopathologic nature may be risk factors for acute urinary retention after biyopsy. Key Words: Prostate biyopsy, IPSS, LUTS
