Abstract (EN)
The construction sector is one of the industries in which occupational accidents most frequently occur in Türkiye. In this context, the safe design approach plays a significant role in preventing such accidents within the construction industry. Integrating health and safety considerations into the design process within the architectural discipline enhances the effectiveness of safe design practices and contributes to occupational health and safety. The aim of this study is to examine the role of designers in incorporating health and safety into the design process within the Turkish construction sector. This research was conducted using a qualitative case study design. A total of 25 architects participated in the study. A semi-structured interview form was developed as the data collection tool, and in-depth interviews were conducted with the participants. The collected data were analyzed using content analysis, and themes, codes, and categories were identified. According to the analysis, it was emphasized that safety should be addressed during the early stages of the design process. However, factors such as time and cost pressures, insufficient regulations, lack of training, and unclear responsibilities were found to negatively affect the process. Architects stated that safety-oriented design decisions not only reduce occupational accidents but also improve overall efficiency. In conclusion, systematic training, clearly defined roles, on-site observations, and the inclusion of occupational safety experts in the design process emerged as essential requirements for the effective integration of safety into design.
