A research on reading interest of Turkish language teachers and their activities to get students adopt reading habit (Sample of Trabzon)

In this research, it is aimed at identifying reading interest of Turkish language teachers; activities for getting students adopt reading habit and the relationship between activities and interest of teachers. This research is conducted relational screening model. Population of the research is comprised of Turkish language teachers who are working in Trabzon city centre and districts of Trabzon in 2012-2013 educational year. 138 Turkish language teachers have been chosen by purposive sampling method. In this research, Reading Interest Scale by Dokmen (1994) and Activities for Getting Students Adopt Reading Habits Questionnaire prepared by the researcher have been used. For analyzing the data, descriptive statistics (frequencies, percentage, mean) and correlation coefficient have been assessed; t test, ANOVA and Scheffe test analyses have been applied. SPSS 16 has been used for analysis. While comparing data, significance level is accepted .01 for Pearson correlation coefficient and .05 for other tests. According to the findings of the research it has been discovered that reading interest of Turkish language teachers are found to be medium level. It is found out that reading interest of female Turkish language teachers are higher than male ones. Turkish language teachers have carried activities for getting students adopt reading habits at the level of usually. Activities for getting students adopt reading habits have been used more by female Turkish language teachers, graduate Turkish language teachers, Turkish language teachers working in city centre compared to male Turkish language teachers, undergraduate Turkish language teachers and Turkish language teachers working in districts of city respectively. A medium-level correlation has been found out between reading interest of Turkish language teachers and activities to get students adopt reading habit. Turkish language teachers having higher reading interest implement activities for getting students adopt reading habits more than those who are lower or medium reading interest.
