A comparative research on the etymological dictionary of the Turkish language

Etymological studies have an important place in the field of philology. Many works were written by foreign Turkologists and Turkish Turkologists in the 19th century and later. Etymological dictionaries are one of the most important studies in field. However, when the etymological dictionaries are examined, it is seen that there is no consistency about word origin. From this point of view, we selected five etymological dictionaries and compared the etymologies of the words in phonetic, semantic and morphological aspects. Our study consist of three parts. In the introduction, we sweat our paper related theoretical concepts, studies related to in this field, published resources, the dictionaries we utilized among these resorces. In the second part, we have created the examination part of our study. We have examined the words that give different information about their origins. In the thir section, we have made an inference basedon the work we have done by classifying the differences that emerged related to origin information. As a result of our study, although there is controversial data in the field of etymology, it is possible to say that Turkish needs a contemporary etymological dictionary.
