A study on the aims, goals and expectations of sport high shools in Turkey

The objective of this study is to research to what extent the expectations of the re-opened Sports High Schools are met and aims and objectives are realised, and whether the students at sports high schools were differentiated in terms of their personal knowledge. In the 2007-2008 educational year, a questionnaire was applied to all the Sports High Schools that were continuing their education (totally 15 schools). The questionnaire was applied to 944 students attending to the first and the third classes, 47 administrators and psychological counselling and guidance teachers, 107 teachers working in the field (of physical education) and teachers of other subjects. The questionnaire was also applied to 23 inspectors employed in the Ministry of the National Education, the administrators in the General Management of Secondary Education and 23 administrators of the Vocational College of Physical Education and Sports.In the study, the questionnaire that is prepared for the administrator and teachers at schools, inspectors within the body of the Ministry of the National Education (MNE), the administrators at the General Management of Secondary Education (GMSE) and administrators of the Vocational College of Physical Education and Sports (VCPES) was constructed in the form of two sections. The first section of the questionnaire contained some optional questions about the general characteristics of the subjects. As for the second section, there were a five-point Likert-type items. In the study, random sampling is used. To make the statistical analysis of the data collected, cross-tabulation method and chi-square independence test in SPSS are carried out. The level of significance in the study is accepted as 0.5 and the validity and reliability are tested separately.According to the data, collected from the subjects that took part in this study, the conclusions reached are as follows: the groups that took part in the study had significant differences of viewpoints in terms of the Entry Examination to the sports high schools (P<0.001), schedules of the sports high schools (P<0.001), sufficiency of the teachers at sports high schools (P<0.001) sufficiency of the sports fields and the equipment at sport high schools (P<0.001), sufficiency of the dormitories of the sports high schools (P<0.001), reasons for doing sports (P<0.001), reasons for starting to do sports (P<0.001), reasons for entry of students to the sports high schools (P<0.001), learners? getting the necessary support for sports education (P<0.001), expectations of the learners at sports high schools about the future (P<0.001). As a result of the study carried out, it can be said that the objectives of the sports high schools have not be realised. In order to enable these schools to reach their objectives, some suggestions are offered in the conclusion section.
