In this study, the social, environmental and economic benefits obtained by recycling of domestic solid wastes were investigated. Domestic solid waste amounts, disposal methods, recycling approach and economic benefits were investigated in the world and in EU countries and was compared with the situation in Turkey. Eskişehir was chosen for case study. The amount, management and recycling practices of domestic solid wastes in Eskişehir Metropolitan Municipality and its affiliated municipalities have been evaluated with current literature, statistics and data obtained from the municipality. Waste collection service is provided to 99.2% of the population in 15 municipalities in Eskişehir. The information about the plant producing electricity from the domestic wastes commissioned in 2018 in Eskişehir was assessmented within the scope of the thesis. This plant will provide electricity to 55.000 houses with electricity generated by burning methane gases at 8 diesel engines, each of which produces 1.4 MW of electricity. At the end of the 10-year operating period, the entire investment will be transferred to the municipality. With this plant, the cost of municipal waste management has been eliminated and rent has been started. The efficiency of recycling depends largely separate collection at source. Eskişehir Municipality carries out good environmental practices, trainings and promotion campaigns in this context. Eskişehir Municipality carries out education and information campaigns on this subject. These studies should be carried out in a multi-faceted and continuous manner in order to achieve success and create lasting behavior.
