Women's movements in Turkey and Islamic women approach to feminism

The modernization process, in which the Ottoman Empire turned its face to Europe with the hope of regaining its former power, brought Western imitation in the cultural field, and women as well as Ottoman men were affected by this process. At the end of the French Revolution, women who rebelled against their lives in Europe started women's movements and these movements also affected Ottoman women. With the influence of these movements, Ottoman women began to question their place in Islam and women's movements emerged in the Ottoman Empire. This attitude, which became evident with the II. Constitutional Era, became more visible with the establishment of the Republic of Turkey, and women imitating the West created a feminist segment. The concept of "Islamic Feminism" appeared with "Islamic Women", which began to be visible in the public sphere in the 1980s. In line with this, different attitudes have emerged that are close to the feminist movement and argue that feminism is never compatible with Islam. The present study fundamentally deals with women's movements in Turkey, the approach of women thinkers who base their perspectives on Islam, to feminism and the concepts, definitions and events revealed by this thought.
