A ghost in "Turkey's Soul": Intertextual and intermedial encounter with Dostoevsky in modern Turkish literature and film

In this thesis, intertextual and intermedial relations established with Dostoevsky in modern Turkish literature and cinema will be examined. What such relations that are thought to be established tell about Turkish literature and Turkish cinema will be pondered. In the first section of the study, the term intertextuality and other debates accruing from this term will be focused on. In the subsequent three parts, keeping the debates regarding intertextuality on mind, canonic authors of three different era Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar, Oğuz Atay and Orhan Pamuk whose relationships with Dostoevsky will be examined by a comparative method. In the fifth part, terms such as intertextuality and adaptation that focus on the relation between various media instruments and field of arts will be discussed. In the next two parts, the focus will be on how to encounter with Dostoevsky in the cinema of Nuri Bilge Ceylan and Zeki Demirkubuz and through which strategies Dostoyevski's texts transferred and adapted into cinema. In every part of the study, centering the texts/films of authors/directors will be compared to Dostoevsky's texts. Meanwhile on one hand, it will be benefited from the term intertextuality and intermediality and on the other hand based the relationship these names established with Dostoevsky, several motifs will be put on the agenda such as evil, tragedy, modernization, East-West, father-son crisis. How Dostoyevski's reception changed from era to era and the difference in ways literature and cinema established a relationship with him will also be mentioned. As a result, what reasons are behind the dense relationship with Dostoevsky in Turkish, and what this means for Turkey, Turkish literature and Turkish cinema will be investigated.
