The impact of renewable energy on energy supply security in Turkey

Abstract (EN)

The energy concept is creating the base of the economic development and growing at worldwide. The energy dependence to the external sources is increasing the risk of the energy supply of the developing countries like Turkey. Considering the fact that fossil resources are non-renewable and mostly located in problematic geographies, as well as the damage they cause to the environment, renewable energy sources have gained importance in order to ensure energy supply security and reduce foreign dependency in energy. The aim of the study is to examine the short and long-term dynamics between Turkey's energy security risk index, financial developments, industrial production index, urban population growth, renewable energy, openness, hydroelectric and non-hydroelectric energy resources variables In the period 1985-2018 is to analyze relationships. In the study, three different models are examined for the variables of renewable energy, hydroelectric and non-hydroelectric renewable energy sources. In the models created, ARDL Cointegration Analysis is used after analyzing the stationarity of the variables with ADF and PP Unit Root Tests for the period 1985-2018. It was concluded that there was a long-term relationship between the variables given in the study. According to the results obtained from the study, industrial production index, urban population growth and financial developments reduce energy security by positively affecting the energy security risk index, while openness to foreign trade, hydroelectricity and non-hydroelectric renewable energy sources increase energy security by negatively affecting the energy security risk index.
