The relationship between emotional intelligence and self-esteem of the university student

The investigation of the relationship between emotional intelligence and self-esteem has been aimed in this study. Also this study examined relationship between sub-dimension of emotional intelligence and gender, age, class, marital status, place they live, economic condition of family, educational state of mother and father of university students. For this purpose, a total of 199 Gaziantep university students 123 women and 76 men were included into the study. Questionnaire method was used for data collection and personal information form was used to get demographic variables. Bar-On Emotional Intelligence Scale for emotional intelligence level of the student and Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale for self-esteem level of the students have been used. Mann Whitney U testi, Pearson Korelasyon, One Way Anova ve Post-Hoc test was used for analaysis of data in the research. The statistical analyses of data obtained from the study have been carried out by SPSS 16.0 Package program. analizinde Mann Whitney U testi, Pearson Korelasyon, One Way Anova ve Post-Hoc test were applied to this analyze data Mean, standard deviation and percentage distributions were given as descriptive statistics. Mann Whitney U test was used in comparisons of the non-parametric dual groups and one way analysis of variance was used in comparisons of the parametric multiple groups. Pearson's Correlation analysis has been used in order to determine the relationship between emotional intelligence and self-esteem. As a result of the analyses it has seen the emotional intelligence level of the students is over the mean value and self-esteem level is sufficient. As a result of the study no significant difference was found difference between general emotional intelligence level and self-esteem but negative, significant and low strength relationship has been detected between self-esteem and personal awareness dimension.
