Examining the relationship between emotional intelligence, hope and resilience in university students

This study aims to investigate the relationship between emotional intelligence, hope and resilience and the role of emotional intelligence and hope in predicting resilience.Another purpose of this study is to examine differences in emotional intelligence, hope and resilience scores of university students in terms of gender, level of class and perceived parents? attitude.The sample of the study consisted of 449 students from six different undergraduate programmes of Faculty of Education at Karadeniz Technical Univeristy. A demographic data form developed by the researcher, Emotional Intelligence Assesment Scale (Hall, 1999 ; Ergin, 2000), Hope Scale (Snyder et al., 1991 ; Akman ve Korkut, 1993) and Resiliency Scale (Gürgan, 2006) were used to collect the data.Independent samples t test, one- way analysis of variance, Kruskal Wallis H test, Pearson corelation coefficient and multiple regression analysis were conducted to analyze the data. The results of Multiple Regression Analysis for the total sample indicated that all the predictor variables (Total Emotional Intelligence and Total Hope Scores) were found to be significant predictors of resilience. The results of the study showed that participants who reported high emotional intelligence and hope scores had better scores of resilience and there were significant differences in emotional intelligence, hope and resilience in terms of demographic varibales. All this results were discussed in light of relevant literature and some new direction were given to the further studies.Key Words: Emotional intelligence, hope,resilience,
