Effect of sodium carboxymethylcellulose modification of urea formaldehyde resin on some properties of particleboards

Abstract (EN)

In this study, particleboards are produced with sodium carboxymethylcellulose (Na-CMC) modified urea formaldehyde resin (UF). The effect of the Na-CMC used in UF modification on the physical and mechanical properties of particleboards was analyzed. As a raw material, 55% softwood and 45% hardwood chips were used. UF/Na-CMC modified resin with the ratios of %5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 and 50 were used to manufacture test boards. FTIR analysis was conducted to determine the effect of NaCMC modification with UF resin. The results show that internal bond strength as one of the mechanical properties of particleboard was decreased by the addition of Na-CMC compared with control group. It was also determined that bending strength and the modulus of elasticity were decreased by increasing of the Na-CMC. It was also found that modulus of elasticity value at 10 % Na-CMC was 2600, 10 N/mm2 being more than (6,6%) control board value of 2438,20 N/mm2. Moreover, it was found that swelling and water absorption values of sample boards were affected negatively by using Na-CMC.
