Abstract (EN)

Concentric braces are designed based on the assumption that they have concentrically loaded joints. To avoid eccentricity at a joint, the line of action of the load from each member framing into a joint should intersect at the joint centroid. However, compression members in real structures are not perfectly straight, aligned, or concentrically loaded as is assumed in design calculations. In AISC 360-22 and EC 1993, certain safety factors applied to consider uncertainties related to initial imperfections of concentric braces. However, these safety factors are the same for each slenderness ratio, and it is not known up to which eccentricity level they provide a safe result. Based on these shortcomings, an experimental and numerical program was carried out to examine the effect of various accidental joint eccentricity conditions on the behavior of concentric braces. Results showed that the effect of joint eccentricity on the buckling strength of concentric braces varies according to the slenderness ratio. According to experimental and numerical studies, the influence of joint eccentricity begins to be insignificant when the normalized slenderness ratio is greater than 1.5. However, when the normalized slenderness ratio is lower than 1.5, the effect of joint eccentricity begins to be significant, and as the slenderness ratio decreases, it becomes even more important.
