Geographic data provided via the web: Example of Cappadocia region tourism map

Geographic data can be presented via the web with Geographical Information Systems (GIS) which is widely commercial or open source software. Tourism information should be sent to users via the web effectively through GIS. Nowadays, In addition to the information presented by open source software with Web GIS, it is possible to improve query and the analysis process. In this study, a sample model, which is going to exemplify an internet based and GIS-Multimedia supported database developed in order to inform the tourists about the region, to be applied to the developing touristic destinations. This model was written with open source codes which will give the tourists the opportunity to acquire information related to the region on GIS media by the server or the clients connected to the server. In this thesis study, Cappadocia was chosen as the pilot region considering its historical and geological aspects and number of local and foreign tourists. This system will provide people with illustrative information as they want to acquire information online about a specific region. Besides this, activation of the same databases's tourism management services and publishment of the prepared data on the internet will help to promote the country. GIS supported up-to-date graphical and attribute data created in the server in scope of this thesis study will be transferred over the internet and will give the users the possibility to view, inquire and analyze any kind of information they want. The platforms the open source application will be published on and the criteria to consider on publishing the application have great importance. In this study, principles of presentation of the location information on the web and methods and techniques of presentation of the maps were studied especially.
