Özet (EN)
William Burckhardt Barker and his father John Barker are orientalists as a family. Both of them served in the borders of the Ottoman State. They took part in Ottoman-British relations. William Burckhardt Barker who knows Hindi, Persian, Arabic and Turkish wrote a book titled Reading Book of the Turkish Language with a Grammar and Vocabulary in 1854 for foreign students in order to facilitate language learning. Because of the use of the Turkish language in a wide geographical area, the author is based on the pronunciation of Istanbul, which is known throughout the world as a reference when writing this book. In this work, unlike many complex works published up to now, he used a more sincere expression. He stated that only grammatical knowledge is not enough to learn a language, and it is necessary to know the characteristic structure of that language well. England is one of the leading countries in which Turkish language departments are established. Barker, who wrote this work, informs the British government about the language features and characteristic structure of eastern languages during the Crimean War (1853-1856). The work consists of 14 chapters. It is mentioned The first 10 chapters focus on grammar. The next 4 chapters are; abstract, composition, pronunciation and dictionary chapters. The only study on Barker's work is Süheyla Doğan's master thesis titled "Studies On Teaching Turkish To Foreigners In The West In The 19th Century" published in 2011.
