Problems experienced by foreign students in their understanding and explananation skills during the process of adaptation to turkish: Gungoren example

The proof of whether an individual is qualified in any language depends on his ability to use word attack skills effectively. The aim of this study is to determine the level of acquisition of four basic skills by foreign students studying in our country and the problems they encounter in this process. Qualitative research method was used in this research. In the study, which was designed in accordance with the case study, one of the qualitative research designs, the data were collected using the semi-structured interview technique and observation developed by the researcher. The research group consisted of a total of 21 students between the ages of 11 and 13 who were attending a secondary school in the Güngören district of Istanbul and who had settled in our country from various countries. These students were made to listen to the listening text and were given worksheets containing questions to answer about the text they listened to. To evaluate their speaking skills, they were asked some questions and voice recordings were made. To examine reading skills, a paragraph was read and audio recordings were made. Finally, they were asked to write a memoir. The data obtained and the findings regarding listening, speaking, reading and writing were interpreted. As a result of the findings, it was determined that foreign students had problems especially in focusing, lack of vocabulary, pronunciation and the difference in structural features of the target language and the native language.
