The evaluation of the news on violence against women in the printed media in the context of feminist social work

Violence against women is among the global problems that need to be solved all over the world. Although various international conventions have been signed in the field of gender equality and various policies have been produced to prevent violence, violence against women continues today and appears as the dark face of modern societies. It is thought that the language used to stereotype gender roles in the presentation of news on violence against women in the Turkish press, the images of the victim and the normalization of the crime are thought to undermine women's rights and reinforce the disadvantaged position of women in society. The aim of this study is to raise awareness about violence against women by addressing the way violence against women is presented in the print media in the context of women's rights and social work. The sample of the study consists of national newspapers in the top ten with the highest circulation in 2021. When the findings are analyzed, violence news reports portray women as victims and perpetuate their passive identity, and the perpetrator is the aggressor and is in an active position. When analyzed from the framework feminist approach to social work, the aim of providing individual and social benefit is seen in the news has not been found. The interest of the reader and the concern for circulation caused the violation of the woman's rights. The way violence against women cases are presented in print media, masculine discourse and discriminatory attitudes and thus perpetuates the patriarchal system, reinforces the disadvantaged position of women and creates discrimination against women.
