Metamorphosis of re-use:Kalcıoglu mansion, Trabzon

It can be possible to preserve historic structures involved in cultural heritage for future generations only if the continuity of functions these buildings have already contained within themselves is maintained or new functions are proposed for them. Bringing these buildings into conformity with current comfort circumstances without ruining their unique functions while assuring that those with new functions would contain structural adjustments which the functions require not only ensures continuity of our historic buildings but also help to preserve them for future generations. In such a working area so disciplined in terms of its theoretical, legal, and technical aspects, a designer?s contribution is crucial as part of physical regulations which she/he can create in a space that will be reused. The starting point of this dissertation is to design flexible and modular practice areas which enable to propose a variety of functions for historical buildings so as to reuse them, and to provide or develop a function by carrying out all that with least intervention. Within the dissertation; The Ottoman- era mansion Kalcıoglu which located in Trabzon one of the urban sites by taking within the scope of protection and re-use. By retaining the space setups of the structure that was built in conformity with the Ottoman practices, we aimed to achieve today?s comfort requirements in the house. It was intended that the house would be redesigned such as to meet the requirements of its new function, the residents would be satisfied with the performances of spaces, there would be no damage to the structure while achieving all that, and also these systems could be practicable ? when needed - for other historic structures with the identical qualification.
