Abstract (EN)

Innovation efforts in the Ottoman Empire gained speed since In the 19th century. With the changing social events, coming into prominence of women in the public also changed the stagnant life and physical image of the man. This study aims to dwell on determining what kind of impact the changes in Ottoman innovation had primarily on men and how the family life was affected by this interaction. While determining the size of this change, changing roles of women's condition depending on the male life will not be ignored and the changes experienced by both genders will also be compared. Although this study, which deals with the change of men, is quite specific, it will not be drawn into a general perspective considering the changes in the whole empire. How male leadership changed in Ottoman family life and the role of women and men in family life will be examined. With the increasing effectiveness of women in the public, the effect of street life and socialization places on men's life changed. Entertainment life, which was indispensable in men's life, gained diversity in this period, and it is seen that certain elements continued. Clothing reforms in the process of innovation both affected men's clothing and changed the fashion life through men's clothing. In this respect, both spatial and temporal limitations have been determined. The temporal limits of this study are the period from the declaration of the Rescript of Tanzimat, in which Ottoman modernization took root, to the First World War. On the other hand, in our study, the social structure of the classical period and the modernization period was compared to show the changes in men's life. The spatial sample of this thesis research is Istanbul. The main reason for this is that it is both the capital city and the change is seen primarily in Istanbul. Moreover, it contains data that will reveal the social structure in a versatile way. In what ways the steps taken by the state in the political field affected the Ottoman man and the social problems that have the potential to cause this effect and the contribution to the process of innovation are the most important questions that this thesis has examined. Keywords: Ottoman, Reform, İstanbul, Male
