Analysis of ecological budgeting as an environmental management system in local governments

Today, the scale of environmental problems has become quite comprehensive and serious. Many factors such as increased human activities, rapid population growth, industrialization, unregulated urbanization, excessive energy demand and changes in consumption habits have deepened and widened environmental problems. These problems pose a major threat to environmental sustainability and future generations. Many municipalities around the world use the ecological budgeting system as a tool to combat environmental problems and ensure the sustainability of natural resources. The aim of this study is to analyze the ecological budgeting system and its contributions to environmental sustainability, and to offer suggestions on what needs to be done to successfully implement the ecological budgeting system in municipalities in Turkey. In this context, the study first revealed the importance of environmental sustainability at the current point and emphasized the need to give more importance to the sustainable management of natural resources and protection of the environment. Then, the ecological budgeting system developed for municipalities and how this system can be used is explained in general terms. Subsequently, Växjö Municipality, which has been implementing the ecological budgeting system since 2003, was examined as a model municipality. The aim is to concretely demonstrate the functioning of ecological budgeting in municipalities and its contributions to environmental sustainability. As a result of the study, it was revealed that the ecological budgeting system should be implemented in municipalities in our country in order to control the use of natural resources and reduce pollution in Turkey. In addition, it was emphasized that the existing problems in municipalities in Turkey should be solved in order to successfully implement the ecological budgeting system.
