Investigation of green education buildings in the context of ecological and economic sustainability

Abstract (EN)
In this study, the strategies implemented by green education buildings that are eligible to be rated by the LEED green building rating system in terms of ecological and economic sustainability and the advantages provided by these strategies are examined. For this purpose, ten green education buildings, which were completed between 2019-2023 and had certificates such as LEED and BREEAM, were examined. These buildings; It was evaluated according to criteria such as reducing energy consumption (active-passive systems), suitable land, environmentally friendly transportation, water management, accessibility, security, life cycle, recreational area design, material (reuse, waste management, recycling) and cost. The measures taken for these criteria were obtained from relevant sources and examined. It has been observed that the most commonly used strategy to reduce the amount of energy consumed in the green education buildings examined is to meet a significant portion of the energy consumed by the building from energy produced with the help of renewable energy technologies. In other words, integrating systems that enable energy production using renewable energy sources (sun, water, wind, etc.) into the building appears as a priority strategy. Green education buildings designed taking into account economic and ecological sustainability make significant contributions to the promotion of green buildings in the region by instilling environmental awareness in the students, instructors and society in education. The spread of green education buildings is very important for environmental awareness and sustainability. It is essential that educational buildings with a large number of users, where students receive education throughout the year, provide high levels of comfort and health for their users. Therefore, these buildings must be designed in accordance with economic and ecological criteria.
