Determination of the relationship of sleep quality with 25-OH vitamin D level and mediterranean diet quality index in adults

Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of nutritional status, serum 25 OH vitamin D levels and adherence to the Mediterranean Diet on sleep quality of adult individuals who applied to the Wellness Clinic. A total of 100 people, 75 females and 25 males, aged between 19 and 65 years, whose serum 25 OH vitamin D levels were checked within the 6 months of this study, participated in the study. A questionnaire questioning the general characteristics and eating habits of the individuals participating in the study was applied and 24-hour food consumption records were taken. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to evaluate the sleep quality of the participants, and the Mediterranean Diet Quality Scale (KIDMED) was used to evaluate the adherence to the Mediterranean Diet. The mean age of the participants in the study was 37.6±12.3 years. The mean BMI of men and women were found to be 27.80±6.459 kg/m2 and 27.51±7.37 kg/m2, respectively. The mean vitamin D level of the participants was found to be 20.74±10.2 ng/ml. When the vitamin D levels of the participants were classified, vitamin D deficiency (<20.00 ng/ml) was observed in 52,0% of the participants. The mean PSQI score of the participants was found to be 5.99±2.84. 69,0% of the participants have poor sleep quality. A statistically significant difference was found between sleep quality and vitamin D level (p<0.05). The average vitamin D level of individuals with good sleep quality is higher than those with poor sleep quality. A statistically significant relationship was found between consuming three main meals and sleep quality (p <0.05). It was determined that 71,0 % of individuals with good sleep quality consumed three main meals. A statistically significant difference was found between sleep quality and KİDMED total score (p<0.05). The mean total score of KİDMED of individuals with good sleep quality is higher than the mean score of individuals with poor sleep quality Since vitamin D deficiency has the potential to cause important health problems in the society, it is an issue that should be emphasized and included in the necessary nutrition plans and policies. In order to better understand the factors affecting sleep quality, studies with large sample groups in which sleep quality is measured with clinical devices are needed.
