The effect of weight stressors perceived by intensive care patients on sleep quality

This thesis study was conducted as a descriptive research to examine the effect of environmental stressors perceived by patients in the intensive care unit on their sleep quality. The research was conducted with the participation of 132 patients hospitalized in Kırklareli Training and Research Hospital Intensive Care Units between April 2023 and March 2024. In the study, the Patient Information Form, Environmental Stressors in the Intensive Care Unit Scale and the Richard-Campbell Sleep Scale were used to collect data. In statistical analyses, the "Kolmogorov-Simirnov Test" was used to evaluate normality, and the "Mann Whitney U" and "Kruskas Wallis" tests were used to compare the mean scores of the scales based on demographic characteristics. IBM SPSS for Windows 29.0 (Statistical Package for Social science for Windows) program was used to evaluate the data obtained from intensive care patients who participated in the study. Descriptive data are shown as numbers and percentages. If the statistical "p" values were less than 0.05, the data were considered statistically significant. The mean score of the patients on the Richard-Campbell Sleep Scale was found to be 29.42±9.65, and the mean score on the Intensive Care Unit Environmental Stressors Scale was 115.03±20.41. There is a weak negative relationship between patients' sleep quality and their perceived intensive care unit environmental stressor score averages. In the study, it was found that the mean score of the Intensive Care Unit Environmental Stressors Scale of patients with chronic diseases was statistically significantly higher. It has been determined that as the environmental stressors perceived by patients increase, their sleep quality is negatively affected in parallel with this situation.
