Abstract (EN)

The rapid development of the industry in the Kandilli District of Zonguldak Ereğli, the place where coal was first found in the Ottoman Empire, triggered an intense work and enabled the construction of industrial buildings to begin in a short time. The region received intense immigration as a result of the need for manpower, the population increased rapidly and new social living spaces were built. Over time, with the developing and changing living conditions, coal mining has been replaced by different energy materials, mining activities have decreased, and industry and living spaces have become out of use. In this study, primarily; the spatial, social and economic contributions of the industrial area, which was established and operating years ago, to the region were investigated. The economic change that started with the loss of function and shrinkage of the coal enterprise in the process until today; It has also caused great changes in the social and spatial structure of the Kandilli region. Along with the decrease in productivity in the coal plant, employment has also decreased and reverse migration has started. Kandilli, which was a planned and prosperous region in the past, has now become an inactive industrial area. It is foreseen that a development movement can be started with the refunctioning of the study area, potential uses for the sustainability of the industrial heritage have been identified, and planning and design proposals have been developed.
