Abstract (EN)
Kadi registers are the judicial records displaying methods to seek individual rights in local courts in the Ottoman Empire. Filedin Kadi courts, they had versatile functions not only within the judiciary system but also within local administration and municipality issues. These registers contribute immensely to the general reassessment of the social and economic history of the Ottoman Empire along with the reflecting upon the daily lives and relationships of the residents of a city, town or region. They also highlight the relationships and legal practices between the state and the people. Kadi registers provide first hand data on the local historical aspects of a particular region such as venue names, foundations, war campaigns, conscription records, tradesmen's confederation, taxes collected from people, welfare tax, regular official appointments, ways and walks of life in the region, social security issues, family structures etc. In this thesis, Kadi registers of Manisa Province No: 154 has been transcribed and evaluated.Court proceeding recordingsthat are dated between 1685 and 1686 have been scrutinized taking consideration of imperial state orders in an attempt to shed light upon social, cultural, economic, administrative and military history of Manisa. Within this objective, documents about various allegations and court proceedings that took place within the aforementioned years, includingtradesmen's association, foundations, war campaigns, welfare tax, official appointments, local judicial body, documented data on salt supply and local banditry have been analyzed for data which might bring to light the socio-economic history of Manisa.
