Abstract (EN)
This thesis examines tobacco smuggling in 18th century Ottoman Istanbul and the processes of state control over this practice. It surveys the issue of tobacco smuggling in the context of tobacco's commercial position within the Ottoman economic system based on the principles of subsistence, traditionalism and fiscalism, the political and religious debates surrounding it, its material culture and the sanctions of political power. It analyzes 18th-century Ottoman Istanbul's tobacco smuggling within the political, religious and economic context of the period and analyzes the smuggling processes and the measures and sanctions developed by the government against this attempt.
