Abstract (EN)

The main purpose of this study is to analyze the viola sonatas written in the 19th century with a focus on interpretation and technical aspects of playing. To achieve this purpose, one has to research the development of viola and the bow, the role of the instrument and its repertory before the 19th century. Furthermore, in order to enhance the interpretation of the sonatas written in this specific period, the general knowledge about the romantic period and the musical characteristics of it need to be considered. Lastly, specific passages from the sonatas were chosen as examples to demonstrate how to use the fundamental strings techniques to achieve a musical approach. National and international literature, sheet music and online material have been used as resources. Keywords: Viola, Romantic Period, Sonata, Technique, Interpretation.
