Abstract (EN)

With the advent and development of technology, its effects on the natural environment have increased every day and are constantly continuing at a great pace today. The negative effects of technology have not only damaged the natural environment but also are affecting the human life. These negative changes that are taking place have led researchers to direct their studies towards the environment, thereby increasing day by day both the number of research studies concerning the environment and the importance attached to the environmental education. This is a descriptive study which aims at revealing the general tendencies in the master?s and doctoral theses concerning environmental education which were published in Turkey between 1992 and 2011. Within the scope of the research subject, the database of Higher Education Council National Theses Centre was scanned, and 204 master?s and doctoral theses related to the subject were reached. Among these, 147 master?s theses and 31 doctoral theses were included in the study sample. These master?s and doctoral theses which were included in the sample were examined in terms of the year of the study, the university, the research subject, the sample, the method of the study, the techniques used in the study, the data collection techniques and the data collection tools, and data analysis techniques. The findings that were obtained as a result of the analyses carried out were presented in tables, and the results below were reached: the majority of the master?s and doctoral theses which were published in relation to environmental education were done so by Gazi University, METU and Marmara University; the sample groups which were preferred most were university students and primary school students; the subjects that were studied most as the research subject were attitudes towards the environment, environmental awareness and environmental knowledge; the mostly preferred research designs were screening model and experimental design; the mostly preferred ones among the techniques used were developing a new method for environmental education and cooperative learning; the mostly preferred techniques for data collection were written data collection and interview; and the mostly preferred techniques in data analysis were parametric techniques and descriptive statistics. In the light of the findings obtained as a result of this study, suggestions were made as to this study and also as intended for the researchers who are going to study subjects related to environmental education.Key Words: Environmental Education, Descriptive Study, Literature Review.
