Abstract (EN)
Accidents that occur in or around the house (balcony, garden, garage, etc.) are called home accidents. It is reported in the literature that children between the ages of 0-6 are more exposed to home accidents. This study was conducted to determine the effect of the attitudes adopted by parents on the exposure of children aged 3-6 to home accidents. The population and sample of the study consisted of 699 mothers with 3-6 years old children enrolled in the kindergarten of 18 primary schools affiliated to the Yozgat Provincial Directorate of National Education in the 2019-2020 academic year. However, mothers who migrated through immigration who did not speak Turkish and mothers who did not want to participate in the study due to a pandemic were not included, and the study was conducted with 392 mothers. The post hoc power analysis performed for the adequacy of the sample size of the study was found at the 0.05 significance level and 95% confidence interval. The data were using a socio-demographic data form consisting of 22 questions prepared using the literature, and the Parents' Attitudes towards Child Rearing Scale-A form was collected using. The scale does not have a total score, but it has 3 sub-dimensions that examine Democratic Attitude, Oppressive and Authoritarian Attitude, Overprotective Attitude. High scores from each sub-dimension indicate that that attitude is dominant. In the evaluation of the data, using the SPSS 22 package program, number, percentage and independent groups t test, Variance Analysis, Mann Whitney U analysis in non-normal distributions, Kruskall Wallis analysis were used.. As a result of the study, 40% of the children have had a home accident at least once. 56.1% of the children who had an accident are man and. The most common type of accident was falling with 32.4%, the most affected body part with the accident was the head, neck, face with 27.2%, and the most frequent accident was the living room with 21.9% and the kitchen with 21.9%. Only 28.6% of the mothers who participated in our study received first aid training. The most security measure taken by mothers to prevent home accidents was "installing window locks" with 54.8%.It was found that mothers adopted a democratic attitude with the highest score of 66.41 ± 6.54 in the sub-dimensions of the ABTÖ.In the study, the mean score of democratic attitude of the mothers' education level of high school and university graduates was found to be high (67.88 ± 6.7), In the study, the average democratic attitude score of mothers with high education (67.88 ± 6.7) compared to mothers with less education and the average democratic attitude score (69.09 ± 8.7) of mothers with higher income than their expenses were found to be higher than other mothers with lower income. In the study, the difference between the child's home accident status, age, gender and type of accident and the attitude scores of the mothers were not found to be statistically significant(p>0.005).In line with the results obtained in the study; it can be said that mothers' attitudes do not affect having an accident. Regardless of the attitude, mothers should be informed about the accidents. Although it is not the direct aim of the study, the average democratic attitude score of mothers with high education level was found to be high. Considering this result, it may be suggested to create programs to train parents with low education levels on child rearing attitudes.
