The examination of 5th grade primary school student's proficiency in the use of science process skills

The aim of this study is to examine 5th grade primary school student's proficiency in the use of science process skills in the science course. In this study, qualitative research methods focus group interviews, document analysis and observation techniques are used. As a data collection tool, designed to examine the scientific process skills worksheets, forms of the focus group interview, personal information form and for the participants, semi-structured observation form were used. Study was applied to a school in Afyonkarahisar in the academic year 2014-2015. The participants of the study are 6 students at the fifth grade who are studying in this school. The data achieved with the focus group interview with content analysis; observations and data collected by the document analysis were analyzed thematically. At the end of the study, it's determined that students for some basic skills (observing, predicting, measuring and classifying) were middle; for the some basic skills (inferring, constructing data, recognizing and using equipment used in science experiments) and all the integrated process skill participants are average. Students could not show the expected success, it was determined that it's because of lack of experience. Therefore, it's suggested that the activities in science course should revise in terms of qualitative and quantitative research.
