Transcription and analysis of Mecca and Medina surre notebooks dated 998/1590

Surre is a general term used to describe various monetary donations and gifts sent to the holy cities in the Islamic world. The dispatch of surre to the Haramayn began during the Abbasid period and was continued by subsequent Islamic states. Ottoman period, it is known that it became regularized after the conquest of Egypt and the holy cities by Sultan Selim I (Yavuz Sultan Selim) in 923 AH / 1517 CE. In this thesis, surre registers of Mecca and Medina dated 998 AH / 1590 CE, pertaining to the reign of examined. The thesis consists of an introduction and three chapters. In the introduction, the scope, significance, purpose, sources, and methodology of the study are explained. The first chapter, Explances the concept of surre, followed by a general overview of its emergence and historical development with in Islamic history. In this context, key concepts related to the Ottoman surre tradition are clarified; the ceremonial details (surre teşrifâtı) are given; the officials involved in the surre dispatch process and their roles are explained; and the locations to which surre was sent under Ottoman practice are listed. The second chapter is devoted to an examination of the surre registers, which form the core of the thesis. Under the title Surre Registers of Mecca and Medina and Content Analysis, the contents of the surre registers identified in the belonging to the reign of analyzed. According to this analysis, recipients of surre allocations in Mecca and Medina are classified into six groups founding conditions. The third chapter presents the transcription of one of the examined registers: the Mecca surre register numbered 3485. In conclusion, it is seen that the surre registers play an important role in understanding the Ottoman Empire's attention and support toward the Haramayn, and that the mentioned registers contain original and valuable information.
