Abstract (EN)
In order to preserve the correct articulation of Qurʼān's words and the aesthetic harmony of its recitation, the science of tajwīd emerged as an independent discipline in the early periods of Islamic scholarship. Over time, numerous works were composed in various regions employing different styles and methods. Among these works is Tuḥfat Al-Ikhwān Min Ḥamalat al-Qurʾān, authored by ʻAbd Al-ʻazīz al-Aghṭāshy, one of the scholars of the late Ottoman period. In this study, the historical development of tajwīd science has first been outlined, followed by an examination of both the printed and manuscript copies of Tuḥfat Al-Ikhwān. These copies were collated to identify their commonalities and differences, and the text closest to the author's original wording was established. During the process of critical edition (taḥqīq), the tajwīd topics presented in chapters (abwāb) by the author were systematically classified. Furthermore, the original sources of certain passages identified as quotations from earlier works were located and cited either in the text itself or in the footnotes. The findings demonstrate that Tuḥfat Al-Ikhwān is not merely a manual of tajwīd rules; it also provides significant insights into the history of the Qurʾān, the tradition of qirāʾāt, and the scholarly heritage of the Ottoman intellectual milieu. In this respect, the work stands as a rare example of late Ottoman scholarship in the field of Qurʾānic recitation sciences, reflecting both the continuity of the classical tradition and the intellectual atmosphere of the period. In conclusion, the critical edition and translation of Tuḥfat Al-Ikhwān contributes to the literature of qirāʾāt and tajwīd studies, while also offering new perspectives on the teaching and transmission of Qurʾānic sciences in the Ottoman era.
