Abstract (EN)
This descriptive study was conducted to identify the determinants affecting postoperative sleep disorders and their underlying causes in who were hospitalized in the cardiovascular surgery clinic of a training and research hospital and underwent open heart surgery. Data were collected using the Patient Introduction Form, Factors Affecting Sleep Pattern Form (FASPF), and Richards Campbell Sleep Questionnaire (RCSQ). Data collection tools were filled out in the form of question-and-answer forms by face-to-face interviews with patients. The data were collected from February to September 2024 in the Cardiovascular Surgery Clinic of Alanya Training and Research Hospital, and 63 patients were included in the study. The data were analyzed using percentages, standard deviation, and analysis of variance (ANOVA). A significance level of p<0.05 was considered statistically significant. In the study, the mean age of the patients was 62.83 ± 8.65 years, the majority (76.2%) were male, and 71.4% had undergone coronary artery bypass graft surgery surgery. In this study, 84.1% of the patients had sleep disorders, after open heart surgery, and 61.9% had poor sleep quality. The determinants affecting the patients' sleep status included anxiety regarding illness, insufficient information about the interventions and the disease, environmental noise, lack of daytime activities and prolonged recumbency, inability to implement pre-sleep habits, and the hospital's sleeping and waking schedules. In the study, the mean score of FASPF was 63.89 ± 10.36, and the mean score of RCSQ was 52.16 ± 22.36. The mean score of the RCSQ indicates that the patients do not have good sleep quality. It was found that there was a negative statistically significant relationship between FASPF and RCSQ scores (p <0.05). As the scores obtained from the FASPF increased, sleep quality decreased. In the study, it is recommended that nurses who provide holistic care and stay with the patient for 24 hours identify the factors that may affect the sleep of patients after open-heart surgery and implement appropriate nursing interventions to improve sleep quality.
