The effect of the breathing exercise on dyspnea score and exercise tolerance in undergoing open heart surgery patients

Abstract (EN)

This study aimed to investigate the effect of breathing exercises on exercise tolerance and dyspnea score in patients undergoing cardiac surgery and done as a semi-experimental study. Study data was collected between october 2012 and september 2014, from patients who were hospitalized at Izmir Katip Celebi University Ataturk Training and Research Hospital and had open heart surgery operation for the first time . The study sample was done according to the power analysis, including by totally 82 patients, 41 of them experimental group and 41 of them clamp group. To make this study, permission was taken as written approval from Adnan Menderes University of Health Sciences Non-interventional Clinical Trials Ethics Committee of the Institute and written consent from Katip Celebi University Izmir Ataturk Training and Research Hospital. After explaining the aim of the research it was announced that there is no risk and damaging to patients, verbal and written consent was obtained from who agreed to participate in the study voluntarily. The respiratory exercise training was given to experimental group with IS 24-48 hours before surgery. The research data was collected by using '' Data Collection Form '', '' Patient Follow-up Form '', '' Borg Scale '' and '' Activities of Daily Living Scale '' and '' 6 Minute Walk Test '' was administered to the patients who participated in the research. Statistical analysis of data was performed using SPSS 15.0 for Windows software. Kolmogorov Smirnov and Shapiro-Wilk normality analysis, Pearson's Chi-Square and Fisher's exact test, Mann-Whitney U, Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Friedman variance statistical analyzes (post hoc Bonferroni correction Wilcoxon Signed Ranks) was used for checking suitability of the normal distribution of continuous variables. p <0,05 was considered statistically significant. There is statistically no difference between experimental and clamp groups of open hearth surgery patients' BKI(p=0.201), EF(p=0.849) and cross klemp times(p=0.215) averages. Experimental group has 28,32±4.29 BKI, and clamp group has 26,88±4.53 BKI. Experimental group has 53,78±8.86 EF percents and clamp group has 54,15±8,51 percents. Experimental group's cross klemp time is 36,24±12,19 and clamp group's cross klemp time is 39,05±11,83. In this research, it was found that, there is positive effect of respiratory exercises with IS which was given to expremental group, on dispnea score and GYA points after discharging, but no effect on 6DYM.
