Abstract (EN)

In this study, catching were conducted using a fyke net between January 2022 and February 2022 in the Akyatan and Ağyatan lagoons located in the Karataş District of Adana Province. A total of 20 fyke net were used, with 4 each of different mesh size (14, 16, 28, 32, and 36 mm). A total of 11 operations were carried out, with 7 in Akyatan Lagoon and 4 in Ağyatan Lagoon. The fyke nets spent 685.08 hours in Akyatan Lagoon and 260.98 hours in Ağyatan Lagoon. When all the fyke nets used in the research are evaluated together, a total of 337 kg of catch was obtained, with 54% (184 kg) consisting of fish species and 46% (153 kg) consisting of crab species. Among the target fish species of the fyke nets, the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) was the most captured fish species in terms of weight, accounting for 16.5% (55.579 kg), followed by Liza saliens with 13.3% (44.948 kg). The catch per unit effort (CPUE) for the different types of fyke nets was calculated in grams per day (g/day) and number (N)/day. The CPUE values for the 14 mm, 16 mm, 28 mm, 32 mm, and 36 mm fyke nets were calculated as 309 g/day (3.7 N/day), 545 g/day (5 N/day), 657 g/day (3.7 N/day), 444 g/day (2.6 N/day), and 115 g/day (0.6 N/day), respectively. The 28 mm fyke net was found to be the most efficient in terms of weight, while the 16 mm fyke net was the most efficient in terms of quantity. For the target species, the European eel, the CPUE values of the fyke nets with a 28 mm mesh size exhibited the best performance, with 213.4 g/day (0.4 N/day). The 36 mm fyke nets was unable to catch any European eels. As for the other fyke nets, the most frequently caught species were Callinectes sapidus, with percentages of 39% for 14 mm, 54% for 16 mm, 74% for 32 mm, and 63% for 36 mm. However, considering that the 28 mm mesh size provided the best performance for capturing European eels, future studies are recommended to evaluate the performance of fyke nets with 20 mm and 24 mm mesh sizes.
